President Ghulam Ishaq Khan dissolves the National Assembly in April dismissing NawazSharif government accusing him of corruption and of 'unleashing a reign of terror' against his political foes. Supreme Court restores the Assembly and Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in May. Strained relations between the President and PM lead to a deadlock which is resolved only once both resign their offices in July.The resulting elections bring Benazir Bhutto back into the driving seat. Farooq Laghari is elected President.
