President Ghulam Ishaq Khan dissolves National Assembly in August dismissing BenazirGovernment, which was accused of ‘corruption, incompetence, and inaction; the release of convicted criminals under the guise of freeing political prisoners; a failure to maintain law and order in Sindh; and the use of official govsernment machinery to promote partisan interests’. In the resulting elections the right wing coalition, Islami Jamhoori Ittehad win the largest number of seats, paving way for Nawaz Sharif to become the Prime Minister.
